EDM 713 Educational Policy and Governance                  – 3 CREDITS

Purpose:

The primary objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of policy in education and the various steps involved in creating and promoting policies that support educational progress. The course will also delve into examining current policies at the local, state, and federal levels and their impact on promoting effective practices and management in schools.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will have gained

  1. The ability to formulate educational policies that foster educational development.
  2. Apply and utilize policies to shape school practices and administration.
  3.  Evaluate and apply the federal policies for enhancing school improvement.

Course content:

This course examines the role of policy in shaping educational practices and governance structures. The course will cover introduction to educational policy and governance, educational policy frameworks, governance structures and systems, policy analysis and development, educational governance and leadership, policy implementation and evaluation, educational equity and social justice, globalization and educational policy, and action planning and implementation. Students will explore local, state, and federal educational policies and their implications for educational institutions. The course also addresses advocacy and policy analysis.

Mode of delivery

Lecture, group discussions, class presentation, reflection exercises and library research.
