LRM 711: Foundations of Leadership & Management- 3 UNITS

Course Purpose:

This course provides students with a foundational understanding of fundamental leadership and management principles. It explores key theories, concepts, and practices essential for effective leadership in diverse organizational contexts. Students will develop an understanding of their own leadership styles, learn essential management skills, and build a strong foundation for further study in leadership and management.

Course Expected Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Define leadership and differentiate between leadership and management.
• Explain key leadership theories (e.g., trait theories, behavioral theories, transformational leadership).
• Explain ethical leadership and social responsibility.
• Describe the functions of management (planning, organizing, leading, controlling).
• Explain basic organizational structures and their implications.

3. Ethical Leadership: Social responsibility, corporate governance, and ethical decision-making
4. Power and Influence: Sources of power, influence tactics, and ethical considerations

• Organizational Structure: Types of organizational structures (e.g., hierarchical, matrix, network)
• Organizational Culture: Its impact on leadership and employee behaviour

• Introduction to Human Resource Management (recruitment, selection, training)
• Introduction to Finance and Accounting (financial statements, budgeting basics)
